lyrics
I was an electric five year old,
with a smile like a shift of sun:
always charming,
slightly cocky, and
a runaroundtown, frenetic, wide-eyed thing.
I used to follow my father.
I’d follow him around his garden, saving
helpless weeds in secret flowerpots I hid behind his shed.
And I was so proud to have saved just
a little bit of life -
you know, the love sprang out of me.
Would you be surprised now, looking
at me, to know that
I always lived my life with fire;
and they couldn’t dilute me down?
I was so proud that I turned my
cartwheels over the watering can.
I planned to have a different job each day, since
I knew I’d never be content with
contentment - or pretending I wasn’t
a runaroundtown, frenetic, wide-eyed thing.
I listed my careers to my mother and I
showed her all my scraps of scribbles.
She noticed, every Friday, I planned
to write the songs I’d sing on Saturdays.
And I was so sure then, that I could be
anything I pleased -
you know, the hope sprang out of me.
Would you be surprised now, looking
at me, to know that
I always lived my life with fire;
and they couldn’t dilute me down?
I was so sure that I turned my
cartwheels over the watering can.
Nascent soul I nearly knew,
you are not forgotten.
You know I shiver to think of who you may have been.
Though you were never strong enough to turn
those cartwheels on your own.
And if you can see through my eyes,
maybe I’ll be the life you were denied;
maybe I’ll be the memory of you.
And we’ll be charming,
slightly cocky, and we’ll be
runaroundtown, frenetic, wide-eyed things.
I need to have you with me
- when the love and the hope spring out -
we'll spare the weeds and I'll be
an occasional child, on paper and on stage.
I don't want to live my life without this fire.
And so I'll tie you in with me where
I can't forget you;
I won't let them dilute you down.
And I'll turn my cartwheels for you.
I'll turn my cartwheels over the watering can.
It's the least I can do.
