lyrics

When I was littler than I am now
and not so grown-up,
there was a game we used to play with
an old, ex-army parachute,
standing round in a circle of friends.
Holding the ends we’d throw the silk high,
before jumping to the ground to watch
from inside: a huge, white, mushroom cloud
sink soft, without casualties.

When we were small, we used to play and let
the parachute silk fall down.
Enclosed so tightly in our
upside-down, giant safety net,
we let the parachute silk fall down.

Alison has her horizon-eyes on
to take the focus off the flawed excuse:
her father’s bruise sinking deep across
her cheek - because she stood too close.
One day, she’ll cut her long hair short
to take the handle from the hands which
had caused her to fear the mistakes that
all her friends were allowed to learn from.

Joshua is a six year old tip-toe-detector.
He believes that the third step down
is the only friend who will ever creak a word
against the people who keep him from sleep.
He has dreams when he is fast awake,
about a safe place he will find and call his own
where he can sleep in a bed and not
uptight against the door.

Now we will find ourselves a field
and an old, ex-army parachute.

For just a moment, we will play and let
the parachute silk fall down.
Enclosed so tightly in our
upside-down, giant safety net,
We’ll let the parachute silk fall down.

Let it fall down.
“Ring-a-ring o’roses”
Fall down.
“You’ll have a pocketful of posies”
Let it fall.
